Extracts from “15 years ago…”
Why do we put on weight?
Why do we put on this nasty weight? It sounds like a very stupid question. And of course you think you know the answer. Eating too much and not doing enough exercise.
This is wrong!
It is a very common mistake to think that you put on weight because you eat too much. If somebody who is fat tells us that she does not eat too much chocolate or ice cream we usually do not believe it. I did not believe it myself and I was wrong!
As a Homeopath I am running a weight loss consultancy and I ask my patients to keep a dairy, writing exactly what, when and how much they are eating. During the last three years I have been analysing this information and have concluded that only one in four or five people who are overweight had this problem because of overeating. This is 20-25%, so what about the other 75- 80%, why are they overweight?
Looking at it from the other perspective there are a lot of people who are eating too much and who are slim. So the very important conclusion is that overeating is not the main reason for putting on weight. Although overeating especially in the evening could contribute to putting on weight. Its mainly wrong eating habits or eating the wrong food in the wrong time.
Obesity – medical issues
Obesity is a disease on its own, but that’s not saying enough. It increases the risk of many other serious diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, liver and gallbladder diseases, and arthritis.
Moreover people with extra weight are:
- three times more likely to suffer from hypertension
- twice as likely to suffer from arteriosclerosis
- forty times more likely to suffer from diabetes than people of normal weight.
What astonishing figures for diabetes! Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder, in which the pancreas does not provide enough insulin. Without insulin cells cannot absorb energy-giving glucose from the blood. The excess glucose is excreted in the urine. Urine becomes more dilute and the person is constantly thirsty, drinking water and looking for the loo all of the time. The blood sugar level is higher than it should be. One in five people will become blind because of the effects of diabetes. Diabetes can also cause stroke, heart attack and hardening of the arteries, kidney failure and gangrene.
Insulin non-dependent diabetes, also known as Type 2 diabetes, is mainly a disease of middle age usually affecting overweight people who have a sweet tooth. This type of diabetes is usually treated by strict diet, to regulate the blood sugar level, and loss of weight is a must. type 2 diabetes tends to run in families, so if you are at risk you can reduce that risk with a healthy eating plan, such as a diet of uncooked vegetables and fruit and fibre rich cereals, whilst limiting sweets, soft drinks, biscuits and cakes.
Really frightening? You can easily find out your risk of having type 2 diabetes just by measuring your waist. You should measure your waist in the morning before breakfast, when you are relaxed, at the end of the out breath.
The risk of metabolic disorder and Type – 2 diabetes mildly increase if the waist measure for women is more than 80 centimetres and for men exceeds 94 centimetres. The risk sharply rises if the measurements are 88cm for women and more than 102cm for men.
Who wants to have diabetes?
But of course, before serious disease affects us, we always think that it will happen to somebody else but not to us. Somebody else has diabetes but not me and meanwhile I want to eat this cake and I will start the healthy diet tomorrow.
Usually this type of tomorrow will never come. But all the diseases mentioned above are not enough.
Monday 21.5.2007 the Times newspaper reported: ‘Britons are risking an epidemic of cancer by failing to curb rising levels of obesity, according to the experts. Greg Martin, of World Cancer Research Fund, said (at the start of Cancer Prevention Week) that exercise and a healthy diet could prevent 40% of all cancers that are linked to obesity.’ Isn’t that enough?
What NOT to do, if you want to lose weight
I understand your strong wish to lose weight, but the worse things you could do are
- use different herbal teas with diuretic and laxative herbs. They will help you little bit but then the weight definitely will come back. Diuretic teas will help you to get rid of water but not fat, you will be dehydrated and that’s all .
- Laxative teas will help you to go to the toilet more often; they will also through away good bacteria and you will have dysbacteriosis.
- Some internet sites suggest drinking diluted vinegar, but it will increase acids in the stomach and could cause ulcer.
- Fasting. Fasting can be a good but very strong way to lose weight, but you cannot do it if you do not have enough knowledge about the changes that are happening in your body, you must not fast without doctors supervision.
